Scrapbooking the Future Follow-up

My scrapbook will consist of several rhetorical decisions that I am facing. To mention a couple, one of my decisions will be what happened that decided to return to school after twenty five years? What is it like to be a non-traditional student at NMSU? What are my plans for the future after earning my degree?

I am very happy that I returned to college but it hasn't been easy, so I hope to convey my questions as best that I can so that students can grasp my thoughts.

Scrapbook Identity

Identity I Plan to Perform in my Scrapbook

Being that I am an older student, my argument will be “ Will experience in life, assist you with achieving your goals?” or “Achieving ones goals does not have a time line”. I am having a bit of a problem with this assignment because it does include the past, present and future. How can one sum is all up into a small presentation? I was going to do a PP and I was also thinking of using movie maker but I don’t want to bore people with details. I need help on ideas on how I can go about this project? I could also start with a few picures of my younger years and what I was doing 3 years ago before I started school, I just don't know. Help!!

Reaction to Oklahoma City Memorial website

Oklahoma City Memorial Website Reaction

By looking at this beautiful memorial site tells of values that other people have for the diversity of life. So many people killed because of that two people wanting to destroy the freedom of our way of life. The worst part of it was that it was “Americans” that were to blame and not terrorists as we all had thought at first.

The Reflecting pool was one that I chose. The shallow depth of water helps soothe wounds, with calming sounds providing a peaceful setting for quiet thoughts . Looking in the pool shows the reflection of someone changed forever by their visit to the Memorial. I know we all read of such tragedies but it is true, that when one is at the site of where the tragedy happened, it gives you chills to think of what went through the minds of all these people. Being at Memorials like these does change your way of thinking forever. I had the opportunity to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington and it was so overwhelming. My brother fought in Vietnam and got back safely but my heart ached for all those families whose loved ones did not return.

The Children’s Area is the other symbol I chose. This is where children around the country sent their own expressions of encouragement and love. This care is represented by a wall of tiles painted by children and sent to Oklahoma City in 1995. I liked it because children need to know what hate can cause. It is a parent’s duty to let children know that this world is full of “bad” people and we might encounter them one day. Not that we want to give nightmares to children but children do need to learn to share their feelings about such tragedies. I like that they provide chalk so that children have a place where they can share their feelings, an important part of the healing process.

I believe that Memorials should be put up because they not only educational, but they keep the tragedy in memory so that we don’t forget. Memorials are useful to establish and confirm common values sending a message of what is significant in our lives. Memorials stand for sacrifice, heroism, and valor. Many of the people that helped put the Oklahoma Memorial symbols never knew any of the people that died personally. They all just had great compassion for strangers that reflected respect for cultural differences.

How Photography can be Used as a Composition

How Photography Can be Used as a Composition

I loved reading these pages because it brought back so many memories. It was as though they were talking about my family. My mother’s favorite plate to make was “mole” and only prepared it when it was someone’s birthday. If pictures could speak, a lot could be said about the photos. In order to be used as a composition, one has to look into how a photograph is viewed through the eyes of the person that is looking at it. The color also has a lot to do with it, how the picture is viewed with intensity or not.

There is also the size of the picture. Is the picture too small or too large. Is there great expression in the photo and finally is the space taken up positively or negatively. In the picture that I choose of my family, the picture has all this and more. This is a black and white picture that our family took a long time ago. It is one my favorite pictures because I look at all my brothers and sisters and instant memories are sprung in my brain. I remember my youngest brother in the far right was upset because my father made him wear that jacket that was borrowed from the photo studio. He didn’t own one but was forced to wear it. I am the one sitting the middle of the picture. I borrowed those boots from one of my favorite cousins that were also visiting from California. That year, all the family got together and to make it the most memorable was that it actually snowed in El Paso on Christmas Eve.

The way this photo conveys meaning is that all of us were together for this Christmas season and my father made sure that we took a family picture. We are a very tight nit family. My father and mother were very loving parents.

Working thesis for Essay 2

My thesis for essay 2 will be on the traning for the use on TK20. With the TK20 trying to implement the program for all incoming freshmen, there should be some kind of training to make sure all documents can be uploaded and viewed effectively by administrators. My thesis is: New Mexico State University must improve their methods of training on the TK20 system for their administrators, professors and students.

List of Technologies and Technology Discourse Communities

I do not belong to many technology discourse communities because to tell you the truth, I don't have much time to sit for hours and talk to my friends. I would much rather get together with my friends and family by having a cook out, go to dinner and even breakfast and catch up with what's going on. But just the same, I do belong to some technology discourse communities because I can keep in touch with friends and family that I don't see often or live in another state.
1. Hotmail
2. Facebook
3. Group Wise (Las Cruces Public Schools)
4. FastWeb
5. TK20 (NMSU)

I would like to use the TK20 as my topic for my second essay. I know it was introduced to the education department last year and this last semester was the first time I had to purchase the site. It is a site for education majors and it will be implemented for all educational majors. I believe there was some opposition from professors wanting to implement it for their classes because there was something else they would also have to learn to use in order for students to use the site. Besides the $108 dollars that it costs to purchase the program, it is suppose to be beneficial to all education students to keep track of all their work and where professors or adminstration can view their work when ever they want to. Even though the TK20 is going to be very beneficial, I believe there are still some quirks that need to be fixed in order for it to be "user friendly". Uploading documents and searching for where you are posting it can be very tricky. I found it to be very frustrating. I know serveral students refused to buy it and turned it work the old fashioned way, paper wise. My argument is: In order for TK20 to be beneficial, steps must be taken to ensure that students and adminstrators will be able to upload and view information accurately, or something of that sort. What do you think?

Discourse Communities I Belong To

Some of the discourse communities I belong to are also work related. Here are some of the communiites I belong to:

1. NMSU Student

2. Facebook

3. Austin High School Alumni Association (El Paso, Texas)

4. Candidate for Teacher Education Program (Future Career)

5. 4H Friends

6. Intercouncil Agency in Las Cruces

7. Project Link Homeless Education

8. Title I Parent Involvement

9. Our Lady of Purificaiton Church

10. Blogspot,com

The three I choose are:

1. Austin High School Alumni Association: The reason I chose this particular community is because I get to keep in touch with all my friends from high school including some teachers that are also alumni. We are a group of about 120 people that have kept in touch since we graduated many moons ago. Ok, since 1976! As a group, we hold fundraisers to assist with scholarships that are given to seniors at the end of each school year. We also participate in events that might help teachers or students through out the year. We constantly keep in touch with our community through email and have members from all over the country. Austin High School, graduates as well as spouses from other schools are encouraged to join and help the commnity of El Paso, no matter what year they graduated. We reinforce the community by keeping in touch with current issues and have representatives from the alumni attend community meetings to keep in touch with what is happening

2. NMSU Student: After being away from school for so many years, I decided to return and earn my degree. Since I started at the DACC, I got back into the swing of things and have really enjoyed being an NMSU student. It's true what they say, you learn something new everyday. Staff at DACC were so friendly and professors were so nice that I felt comfortable right away. Dr. Huerta does a very good job in getting to know students and getting students ready for NMSU. I love NMSU too. I have enjoyed all my classes, except for a couple but that is expected. NMSU is a great univerisity because people are friendly and the campus is student friendly. Dress is casual or come as you are, for students anyways. I will apply for the Teacher Education Program which I will then join the community of graduates who will become teachers.

3. Title I Parent Involvement/Project LInk Homeless Program: Project Link meet the unique needs of our homeless students. We do this by maintaining consistency of the educational process while living in a shelter, relatives, or transitional housing. Parent involvement link the famiy with the school so that they can become more involved with their child's education. In this community, three family/school liaisions and a social worker refer families to community resources that can assist the families with food, clothing, basic needs and support services. We offer immediate access to free and reduced lunch programs. The dress for this community is casual with permission to wear jeans on Fridays. Community members usually assist with school supplies and backpacks for school aged children. Also other community members assist with the program when needed.

Definitions of Discourse Community & Commonplace

Discourse communities are people who share the same interest in topics that are the same as yours. There is a sharing of knowledge in those particular topics and also have a specific language that is used for that community so that everyone in that community can follow their conversations. A discourse conversation is important because it is how we communicate with the social world we live and work in. It also has to do with understanding the words that are used, how to form paragraphs from those words, and what information is already in place by the community members. Communities can be phrases, concepts, icons or images.

A commonplace is a rhetorical device which consists of themes or compositions which can be delivered as it is required. The language can carry a lot of weight for a particular group and even in the society. So a commonplace is words that are used to identify or explain key ideas.

"Maybe" Commercial with Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan’s “Maybe” Commercial

Link: www. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woOu_4l3lio

Making commercials and advertisements usually make use of many different methods of persuading potential customers. There are three methods or modes that are associated with making this type of means of persuasions. In order for this to happen, the three modes used in order to communicate these responses include ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos has to do with credibility which is based on one’s character or appeal of personality. Pathos is the part where the commercial makes an appeal to the readers or viewers emotions, causing the viewer or reader to identify with the writer’s point of view. Logos appeals to the logical means of persuading by reasoning and backing up what the writer is saying and giving reasons to support the evidence. By viewing Michael Jordan’s “Maybe” commercial, let’s see how this commercial targets all ages and how this system can be applied to this commercial.
First, the commercial is very simple. The advertisers use the first seconds of the commercial to show Michael Jordan “flying” through the air to make his usual baskets, while Michael Jordan’s in the background narrating that maybe it was his fault that led people to believe that “it was easy, when it wasn’t” pertaining to the fact that people believed it came easy for him to be the best basketball player there was. Then the commercial continues with Jordan’s stats of all the awards he is has received, like him holding the record for most NBA scoring titles (10), all NBA – first team for seven seasons, NBA Rookie of the year, NBA Slam Dunk Champion and these stats and more are quickly shown. Since this is factual information, viewers are already attentive to hear what the narrator; in this case Michael Jordan has to say. His character or his celebrity status is used to gain recognition for the product he is promoting, which is his own brand jumpman.com and the Nike brand which has heavily sponsored him since he started and continues to do so. At this point, viewers have their emotions all stirred up because they feel they didn’t know Michael Jordan felt this way. Michael Jordan does a good job of telling the viewers again, that “Maybe he lead them to believe that his game was built on flash and not fire” and “that failure gave him strength.” Here, even though not everyone is a basketball fan, the viewer can associate himself with these two statements because we all have our strengths and we all have had to prove ourselves in way or another. By showing all the places where Michael Jordan practiced, the high school he attended, advertising his alma mater “Laney High Buccaneers” and having the outside basketball court where he often practiced, he is showing the viewer the “regular” side of the great legend. Another meaningful scene is the basketball lying on the outside court, the scene is dark, the basketball hoop does not have a net but a few dangling strands of a net blowing with the current of the wind. The wind is blowing with all the leaves, sticking to a no brand, plain brown basketball. Viewers feel like Michael Jordan is just another human being that makes the best of what is given to him. He did not grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth and by showing his humble home (when he was growing up) with all his family pictures, you already feel something warm for him. People start to feel that they are getting to know him by the things he is saying and the tone in which he delivers the message.
Here, Michael Jordan is using his social status, identity, reputation, his fitness and self-esteem to suggest that he is an ordinary man but the difference of why he has gotten so far, is because he worked hard to get there. Even tough Michael Jordan is not seen through most of the video, his voice puts out a clear picture of what he is talking about, being successful. The commercial is setting the viewer up for the final key advertisement promotion that is aimed for all ages. They show the trophy room of Michael Jordan. What can be better than that? All those trophies and that huge room with the Bulls logo makes anyone want to be successful. Finally, Michael Jordan is shown with a group of young men, probably wanting to be basketball players, with him finishing his talk as though he has been talking to them since the start of the commercial. The advertisement is maximized by Michael Jordan telling them, “that maybe, you’re just making excuses”. Again, as you look at all the young men that are standing in the gym, they are wearing the jumpman logo, giving the viewer the idea that they too want to be like Michael Jordan and wearing his clothes will make them have the same feeling as they do now. In the last frame, it states, become legendary and then it closes with the Michael Jordan logo, jumpman23.com. From the commercial’s subjective point of view, wearing clothing that has to do with Michael Jordan will give them the feeling of belonging to something that is perceived of that which is greatness. The person wearing these types of clothes perceives himself, self-worthy. Parents get caught up in this type of advertising and want their children to feel good about themselves and so they go out and buy the product that would do just that.
In hard times and in good times, when celebrities are used for advertising, the product which they are tying to sell will get a better chance of making it big with these sort of advertisements that don’t necessarily tell you to go out and buy the product but, offer different meanings for different groups of people thus, offering visual rhetorical context.

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

My definitions of the three appeals are as follows:

Ethos – has to do with credibility. It is based on one’s character and that we know what we are talking about. The author gives the impression to the reader that we are worth listening to because we are experts in that subject.

Pathos – is the emotional part where the commercial persuades by appealing to the reader’s emotions. It also can contain a certain language to affect the emotional response so that it can effectively enhance an argument. Pathos causes a person to identify with the writer’s point of view and causes the person to decide or action.

Logos – is the logical means of persuading by reasoning. What makes an effective reason to back up what you are saying. Reasons have to be given to support your evidence

In the commercials I am considering, I can’t believe I talked about Nike and the impact it has in sports. I remember when my children were young and yes, they both wanted Air Jordan’s, it was all about Michael Jordan and believe it or not, it still is. The Michael Jordan commercial that I chose definitely contained pathos because it makes young athletes want to be like Mike. I even identified with MJ on his point of view on how a person becomes successful. I also remember his early commercials on how his sneakers can make someone jump high. I believe I can fly was the motto. Every kid believed it and parents seconded it. No, sneakers can ‘t make you fly, but wearing MJ’s maybe can make it feel better to try. Ethos of course, is a big part even now with MJ still making commercials. MJ is a very creditable person and he knows what he’s talking about. As far as logos are concerned, MJ does give you the reasons in his commercial why he is so great. He trains hard and doesn’t give up.

Commercial / Ads for Essay

Here are a couple of ads I found that I thought were interesting:
First: Mencia teaching to students about Bud Light beer. My argument might be "How companys can use offensive ads to sell their product." or "What might seem to be offensive advertising, might not be". Here is the site:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=670X2MCWzK0

My second commercial is about Michael Jordan. I have always loved this commercial. My argument might be "How one might make excuses in everyday life" "What's your excuse?" How positive people can make a difference in someone's life. We all know that Michael Jordan's sponsor was Nike and actually this is a good commercial advertising himself. He has a multi-million dollatr empire.

I forgot to post where I got this WWII poster. It was from Part 2: He knew the meaning of sacrifice
I chose this poster because I am very thankful for the men and woment who serve our country. I know I could never be a soldier. This poster is very specific about telling "YOU" how much our servicemen and women SACRIFICE for our freedom. The red color of "YOU" make it clear that the person that is reading this poster gets the point that it is directed to them. I think we use the word sacrifice in our everyday lives that we again, take things for granted. I sacrifice my time away from watching a football game to finish my homework, or I sacrifice staying up late, not getting enough sleep to party because my friend is getting married, etc. We all say things like that. I had never seen this poster and another interesting thing I noticed was the red sun or moon? behind the soldier. I might mean that it's a brand new day, the soldier has sacrificed his life so that "you" can have a brand new day to live. What do you all think?
