List of Technologies and Technology Discourse Communities

I do not belong to many technology discourse communities because to tell you the truth, I don't have much time to sit for hours and talk to my friends. I would much rather get together with my friends and family by having a cook out, go to dinner and even breakfast and catch up with what's going on. But just the same, I do belong to some technology discourse communities because I can keep in touch with friends and family that I don't see often or live in another state.
1. Hotmail
2. Facebook
3. Group Wise (Las Cruces Public Schools)
4. FastWeb
5. TK20 (NMSU)

I would like to use the TK20 as my topic for my second essay. I know it was introduced to the education department last year and this last semester was the first time I had to purchase the site. It is a site for education majors and it will be implemented for all educational majors. I believe there was some opposition from professors wanting to implement it for their classes because there was something else they would also have to learn to use in order for students to use the site. Besides the $108 dollars that it costs to purchase the program, it is suppose to be beneficial to all education students to keep track of all their work and where professors or adminstration can view their work when ever they want to. Even though the TK20 is going to be very beneficial, I believe there are still some quirks that need to be fixed in order for it to be "user friendly". Uploading documents and searching for where you are posting it can be very tricky. I found it to be very frustrating. I know serveral students refused to buy it and turned it work the old fashioned way, paper wise. My argument is: In order for TK20 to be beneficial, steps must be taken to ensure that students and adminstrators will be able to upload and view information accurately, or something of that sort. What do you think?

First, that's a pretty good list of technologies. You might also want to check out Classroom2.0. It's a social networking group for teachers who use tech. You might enjoy it.
I thinkthat TK20 sounds like a great topic for essay 2. I am really interested in finding out more about it.
Some things you will want to do in your paper is define the tech dicsourse community (it sounds like WebCT or something - is that right) and then think of how it builds community. In this case it sounds like that community is mandatory. Does that impact how people feel about the group?
I like that you are already focusing on how hard or easy the space is to use. You might also think about how it looks. Lots of learning tech tools are really boring looking and I think that has an impact.
Let me know if I can help you as you continue to focus your paper topic.

  2. Thanx Ms. Jen, I will try that site. I do want to learn more about using tech in the classroom. It is like WEB CT but only for education majors. It's suppose to keep all your work for seven years in this data base and you could access it when ever you need for a job or anything of that sorts. Thanks for suggesting on how it looks because I think even that is not friendly. I will surely call if I get stuck. Thank you.

  3. I don't really know much about the TK20. But it sounds like a good program for people to know about. The pros and cons towards the topic. Someone in that field would want to know what that program is like and if it benefits.
