Here are a couple of ads I found that I thought were interesting:
First: Mencia teaching to students about Bud Light beer. My argument might be "How companys can use offensive ads to sell their product." or "What might seem to be offensive advertising, might not be". Here is the site:

My second commercial is about Michael Jordan. I have always loved this commercial. My argument might be "How one might make excuses in everyday life" "What's your excuse?" How positive people can make a difference in someone's life. We all know that Michael Jordan's sponsor was Nike and actually this is a good commercial advertising himself. He has a multi-million dollatr empire.

Alicia-
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough decision. I love both these ads -- I am a pretty big Jordan fan, too.
I really like what you have to say about how the Bud light ad is offensive. What reason do you think they have for using racial stereotypes to make their argument? Is it an effort to make the product seem universal? Does it work for you? If you go with this one you will probably need some outside research to help you discuss advertisers' use of humor and offensive material.
The Jordan one is really interesting and might actually easier to develop a 3- to 4-page paper about. There is so much interesting imagery and music. Why, for instance, do you think the first min. of the commercial has no people in it? How does that make viewers feel? Also, what do you think about the music and the use of Jordan's voice throughout? How does it effect you that you hear him but don't see him?
I can see you making either ad work, just make sure that you focus on how the ad makes meaning rather than the ad's content. The focus of the essay is to break down the rhetorical decisions being made in the ads, not their messages.
Can't wait to see what feedback you get from your blog team.
Nice choices-
Jen
Alicia,
ReplyDeleteBoth of these commercials are great. I thought the Bud light was pretty awesome becasue you had the mixture of races all liking the same beer. I also laughed a little. I didnt see it as offencive, but then again that's maybe just my point of view. I think it showed how everyone everywhere likes Bud Light. ( I actually dont drink lol)
The MJ one I felt a lot of emotion coming from the ad. But im not quite sure i get it. Im not much of a fan but I really dont know what its trying to get at. Maybe you can explain it a little better? That way i can give you a little more feed back
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteYes, I think I like Michael Jordan too much. Ms. Jen, this whole commercial I believe he wanted Michael wanted to make was because I am sure people always viewed him as some basketball God and when he made mistakes, they would say "How could he make such a mistake" and I always heard comments from the sport commentators how everything came so easy for Michael. I love this commercial because Jordan's voice sounds strong and matter of factly at the same time. I believe he is trying to say that it is up to all of us to do what we love to do, but we have to work hard in order to achieve it. Everyone thought that just because he had a gift of being a great ball player, it just worked for him. But, we all know that in order for one to succeed, it takes work and nothing JUST comes easy. Samantha, he is a great basketball legend and still is. He is the one that makes the Hanes commercials. He is very low key, doesn't give much interviews and always had so much class when he played on the court. He was and is a very positive model for children and adults. I think.
I would appreciate a little more feedback and I am leaning more towards the MJ one. I like Carlos Mencia and I really wasn't offended but I know lots of people that were and they were Hispanic. Thanx all.
